David Corenswet, the actor marching into the iconic role of Superman in James Gunn’s future Superman film, has exposed that he hasn’t conventional any advice from his prototypes Henry Cavill or Tyler Hoechlin. The statement, made during a recent interview, has sparked interest among fans curious about how Corenswet is formulating to wear the cape without direct input from those who’ve donned it before.
Speaking candidly, Corenswet shared that while
he deeply respects both Cavill and Hoechlin’s portrayals of the Man of Steel,
neither reached out with personal tips or guidance. “I haven’t spoken with
them,” Corenswet self-proclaimed. “They’ve both done amazing work in the role,
but I think each Superman needs to be its own version.”
Henry Cavill played Superman in the DCEU
beginning with Man of Steel (2013),
bringing a brooding and modern take to the character. Meanwhile, Tyler Hoechlin
currently stars as the iconic hero on The CW’s Superman & Lois, offering a more grounded and
family-oriented interpretation. Despite their varied approaches, both actors
have left a strong mark on the character — and Corenswet is now tasked with model
out his own legacy.
Fans had speculated that Cavill, known for his
generous interactions with fellow actors and fans, might have passed the torch
in some form. However, Corenswet’s approach seems to be one of deferential
distance. “There’s a lot of inspiration to pull from the comics, the history,
and James Gunn’s vision,” he explained. “I want to find my own truth in this
role.”
Set for release in 2025, Superman marks the first major film in James Gunn and Peter
Safran’s rebooted DC Universe. Corenswet’s casting was met with excitement,
especially given his physical resemblance to the classic comic book Superman. Together
with him, Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane, with a supporting cast that
promises a fresh and ambitious take on the mythos.
While
fans may have hoped for a symbolic baton-passing between Supermen, Corenswet’s
choice to build his Superman independently aligns with the new direction DC is
taking. As the actor prepares to redefine one of the most beloved superheroes
of all time, it’s clear he’s doing so on his own terms — no cape-handling tips compulsory.
